Explanation of the term Neutrality

Policy of noninvolvement in hostilities existing between other states. This status was recognized by international law as early as the 15th century. The rights and obligations of neutral powers have been codified by international treaties and conventions. A nation proclaiming its neutrality must be wholly impartial and refrain from helping or hindering any side in war efforts. It must furthermore protect its own territory from encroachment by belligerents."
